Register and Vote!
It's not just our right, it is our responsibility!
Registrar's Office - City Hall.  The number is 304-357-0110

When such a small amount of voters determine your local issues you are allowing a small amount of people to make determinations on your life. That is being ruled, not democracy.

Upcoming.... The Hotel vs. The Health Department. My response via WSAZ below.
What are the current hotel occupancy rates in Charleston? Is a hotel really needed more than health care? The Mayor should focus more on the safety of his citizens, and more jobs. (Congrats to Huntington, again.) The crime problem on the 1400 block of Jackson St for example, just one. I rarely hear the Mayor, Carper, or City Manager on that topic. Carper in the past favored giving all water services to WV American Water. And the thanks? A huge rate increase. That’s real good for our residents. Shouldn't all have been more focused if not on public safety, or jobs, then on the sewer problems? Just one more example. Priorities are obvious. How can we hope to have a strong convention business with the neighborhoods having such problems? As for the hotel being a boost to our economy, well not when visitors experience what we see, again Jackson St just one example. I would like my votes back Mr. Carper & Jones.
I will attempt to get answers on occupancy rates, why the sewer problem was ignored, and what the "powers that be" have planned to address new jobs and the crime problems.
More coming!

This website was originally opened in 2005 as my personal response to living in the 1400 block of Jackson Street. I sadly found that original advice given me by the Mayor's office, the Charleston Police Department, and concerned friends was pretty much the answer. That being a question / suggestion..."Can you move?"  More coming!

Home Rule? A good thing for Charleston?
With such a small amount of voters participating in the last election I fail to see how the local elected are "closer" to the citizens than those working in the State Capitol. Such a small turn out sends no message other than apathy to our elected. I am also curious as to what "taxes" are planned. Not my word but used in all broadcasts on this subject. More coming!

Over the last couple of years the Safer Charleston website I admit, has been neglected. After moving into a quieter area, and needing the calming experience, I was not sure what to put here. I no longer knew first hand of the issues I had previously. So I focused on general safety, holiday safety, and most recently voting and the real need for our local citizens to vote!

Safety comes in many ways and is enhanced by many things. Lighting, safe construction, jobs, security systems, telecommunication systems, mass communication such as television and radio, heating systems, water, all add to our safety and enhance our safety. So my next venture will be an anonymous survey to determine what you the citizens feel about;
 Utility companies - the rate increases and service provided.
 Television & radio stations, newspapers, - coverage and accuracy provided.
 Neighborhood safety and how to improve.
 Additional topics as brought by the survey responses.

I hope, as with our first survey you will take a few minutes to complete. Once the survey has ended the aggregate results will be sent to City Council Members, Mayor's office, and pertinent agencies rated in our survey. This is your chance to provide a citizens report card on life here in Charleston. Lets make things better!

Businesses you are invited to assist an support!
