NUMBERS DON’T LIE
A recent newspaper article mentioned an encouraging statistic—last year there was only one murder committed on
the West Side compared with a double digit total for 2004. What a decrease! Yet another piece of evidence that the West Side is on the way back.Certainly much of the credit can be given to the Charleston Police Department, which has committed more resources
to our part of town. In addition, residents themselves have made a difference, for example through neighborhood watch groups. What are some of the benefits to a decrease in crime? Improved property values, both residential and commercial.
More business activity, which leads to more jobs. More people involved in civic and church activities, because they are not afraid to venture out at night. While the number of murders can’t decrease much more, we can continue to work to reduce crime generally. Public
Safety is job #1. Done right, all sorts of good things will followMichael Stadjuhar, President
