It's Your Street Too!

The goal of "It's Your Street Too!" is to include and specifically invite all residents of Charleston to actively involve themselves in making our streets safer, cleaner, and a better place on which to travel and live. Streets are the very arteries to our neighborhoods and finally homes. You wouldn't line the sidewalk in your yard with litter, crime, violence, and urban decay would you? Allowing those same elements on your street is pretty much offering the invitation.

At Safer Charleston, WV you can choose your level of participation. The reasoning is that more participating at some level, is better than no one or little participation at all. Also work and daily family schedules must be considered and addressed. The goal is to improve not create stress. Private residents may participate in all sorts of ways. You can display a "We Support Safer Charleston WV" sign in your window. This tells everyone that you want a safer Charleston. More to the point it tells those causing the problem they are not welcome at your door. This participation takes a few minutes to print the sign, some tape, the window, and voila you are helping make your city a safer place.

Of course we hope that residents will be further participants for a better Charleston by reporting all crimes and suspicious behavior to appropriate authorities. See our section on Crime Prevention & Neighborhood Safety for some tips on making your home and neighborhood more safe. See information on crime reporting. Another part of It's Your Street Too is actual street safety and repair.

In many cases our first survey takers complained of sidewalks and streets in bad condition and need of repair, a need for increased street and alley lighting, and litter problems. The first step for repair is of course to contact the correct city or county agency.

If you live in the city limits of Charleston a good place to start would be The City of Charleston Public Works. Outside the city you will need to contact either the county or city in which you reside. These problems effect us all in either daily travel or just daily life. Safer Charleston, WV will gladly post your reports on streets and sidewalks in bad condition. We can even track the repair process here on the website. This will help other residents understand the reporting and repair process. It may also help the condition of the reported streets, as residents may seek alternate routes. Send your reports on the poor or dangerous condition of streets and sidewalks in Charleston to us after you make your report to the appropriate agency.

The problem of litter is another frequent "street" issue talked about in the survey. You can contact the Refuse Department of the City Of Charleston Public Works.  My understanding is that complaints of missed pick up may be made at the same location. I have made complaint on vacant property which had large amounts of debris in the yard to this agency and they were helpful in correcting the problem.  If your neighborhood or street has an ongoing problem with litter for some reason email us and we will see if we can find you a contact. However, we will want to share that information here for other residents. That would not include your name or contact information, just the nature of the problem.

Of course if you have time and wish to really be involved, contact us! We always need help in verifying abandoned property complaints and all around help. Always open to new suggestions and ideas as well!
